In 2004, there were 5,752, 861 people in the state of Missouri. Out of these, in that year, a total of 39,466 people sought admission in various alcohol and drug rehab centers in Missouri. This was also the time when many drug rehabs in Missouri were changing their formats to tie in with the modern times. From being purely medical institutions that relied heavily on detox, these institutions were bringing counseling at the forefront.

For specific drug numbers in 2004, it was seen that marijuana addiction was leading the pack. Out of those that checked in for the rehab treatment, 26.8% people had marijuana problems. Cocaine drug addiction in Missouri came a close second, contributing to 16.9% of the total figure. Heroin addiction was found to be at the lowest, with only 4% of the people admitted for drug rehab in Missouri found having an addiction of heroin.
