How Effective is Counseling in a Drug Addiction Treatment Program?
There is a lot of skepticism about the effect of counseling in an addiction as severe as drug abuse. When a person is abusing a particular drug, the high that is provided by the drug is so high that mere verbal counseling certainly seems quite pale in comparison.
That is the reason why the drug addiction treatment centers use different approaches to make their counseling effective. When a person is into a heavy drug addiction and when his or her family has provided the intervention for beginning the treatment, the drug rehab will initially focus on counseling the family members. At the same time, they will directly introduce the patient into a detox program. At this stage the patient is not in a position to understand or retain any counseling, even if it were to be done. But this is a great opportunity to counsel the family members about the kind of care that they need to take for the patient.
Once the detox is done, and the patient is brought back to a stable state, that’s the time when counseling him or her would have any effect. Since the euphoria of the addiction is over, the patient will be in a much better frame of mind to understand and accept what’s being counseled. This is also a great time to bring home to the patient the point of aftercare and preventing an addiction from occurring again.
In a drug rehab treatment program, counseling is only meaningful after the patient sees the fruits of the detox, which are a better health and lifestyle. That becomes the primary intention of the people administering the treatment to the drug addict.
