Drug Addiction Treatment-Breaking the Cycle
Drug addiction is still a growing area of research. The more our medical experts learn about it, the more truths they discover.
With the theoretical research of drug addiction increasing in this manner, it is only understandable that the treatment programs are changing too. That is what makes the whole topic of addiction treatment much more challenging.Until the turn of the last decade, drug addiction was thought to be more of a pathological condition, something that could be treated by a detox program. Detoxification implies the removal of toxic products from the body by the use of antibiotics. Earlier, a detox program was considered sufficient to treat a drug addiction, both from the effects of the addiction and from any subsequent urges.
Later, this outlook towards drug addiction underwent a change. Experts became more conscious of the psychological aspect of drug addiction, which was indeed what caused the person to have a craving for the substance in the first place. This brought about a change in the treatment patterns too, with counseling becoming much more important than the physical treatment processes including detox.
Today, we are learning more and more about this psychosomatic aspect of drug addiction. Quite recently, the cycle that drug addiction generates in the person’s body has been studied. When a person consumes a drug, this creates euphoria in the mind of the person. The person likes this euphoric feeling so much that he or she does not want to come out of it. But this high does not last long. When it subsides, it leaves in its wake a feeling of utter despondency. That makes the person consume more of the drug.
This is the cycle which is quite difficult to break. Medical approaches are trying their level best to find an effective solution. Today, the treatment programs implemented by the drug rehab centers are quite reflective of whatever research has been done in this field so far.
