Do not underestimate your addiction. It is a difficult foe that will not give in easily. The commitment level required can be hard to explain to the addict attempting recovery. It is sometimes even harder to explain to those around the addict. Addicts loved ones often make uninformed statements like “why don’t you just quit” or “You started this thing and now you need to stop it”. It is certainly not the speakers fault. Those who have not struggled with addiction can not be expected to understand. Substance abuse recovery is not easy. It is not something that can be done alone.

Addiction is not as complicated as many make it out to be. It isn’t easy by any means but it isn’t complicated. It’s about as simple as a fishing hook. When that hook with it’s worm or it’s cheese or whatever bait it has on it hits the water, the fisherman has done his part. At that point every thing is up to the fish. The fish chooses to come to the area where the bait and hook are. The fish chooses to take that first nibble and then the fish chooses to take the full bite. The addict makes all these same choices; choosing to be around drugs, choosing to try that first little bit, and finally choosing to consume a large amount.

This is one reason why individuals should be encouraged to seek addiction treatment in a rehab center rather than be judged harshly for their behavior.
