HIV is a worldwide epidemic that is strongly related to drug use. More than one million people in the United States have HIV, and one in four of those people don’t even know about it. Around the world, it’s estimated that there are over 50 million people with this condition. What does HIV have to do with drug addiction? Drugs have been a contributing factor to the spread of HIV since the beginning. This includes both injection and non-injection drugs.

Whether they realize it or not, every single person in the United States is affected by drug abuse and alcoholism on some level. Of course, family, friends, and the addicts themselves have their lives changed by drug and alcohol abuse. Whether or not you personally know someone who suffers from an addiction problem, many of these issues negatively affect society as a whole. This is one reason why individuals should be encouraged to seek addiction treatment in a rehab center rather than be judged harshly for their behavior.

Methadone is a prescription drug that rehab facilities and methadone clinics use to treat opiate and heroin addiction and to reduce the symptoms of detox. The detox period can be very painful and make an addict seriously ill. By using methadone, people can detox from other more dangerous drugs, like heroin, and not feel the withdrawal symptoms. However, the problem with this treatment is that the individual can then become very addicted to methadone.
