Addiction Treatment With or Without God

Religion and God play a big role in many addiction treatment centers in the United States. It is sometimes insisted that addicts give control of their life over to a higher power.

They are encouraged to pray for strength. This is an element in every twelve-step program, and many treatment facilities are faith-based, as well.Religion and spirituality in addiction rehab centers are wonderful for those people who find it beneficial. There are many individuals who come to spirituality for the first time in their life during addiction recovery. Some say that is has been the most important factor in their success of maintaining sobriety. It can provide a much-needed source of strength, a method of relaxation, a sense of meaning in life, and an outlet for stress and worries.

However, all of this religion can also turn away many people who are simply interested in addiction treatment and don’t want the involvement of God. They may have had bad experiences with religion when they were younger, and repeatedly bringing it up in association with recovery only serves to create more discomfort and pain. Some people simply aren’t interested in the religious aspect and feel left out or frustrated when it is continually talked about. In this situation, the only purpose religion serves in treatment is alienation. It can actually give the patient one more reason to quit rehab. You can’t force someone to accept religious beliefs into their life. Many people find spirituality helpful for dealing with drug and alcohol addiction, but not everyone will. There is no reason why it’s necessary.

There are other options available for individuals who wish to get addiction treatment without religion. You may have to look a little harder to find them in some locations, but there are numerous non-twelve-step support groups and secular rehab facilities being offered around the country.
