Whether they realize it or not, every single person in the United States is affected by drug abuse and alcoholism on some level. Of course, family, friends, and the addicts themselves have their lives changed by drug and alcohol abuse. Whether or not you personally know someone who suffers from an addiction problem, many of these issues negatively affect society as a whole. This is one reason why individuals should be encouraged to seek addiction treatment in a rehab center rather than be judged harshly for their behavior.

Social Problems
It’s easy to notice the vast amount of social problems that are related to drug and alcohol abuse when you think about it. Drunk driving is one of the first things that come to mind, and there is also driving while under the influence of drugs. Addicts are much more likely to commit both violent and nonviolent crimes. Individuals with severe alcoholism and drug addiction often neglect or abuse their children. The majority of patients in drug treatment centers say that they were abused either sexually or physically when they were growing up.

Community and Family Problems
On the community level, addiction tends to attract more addiction. Being close to people who suffer from drug and alcohol abuse makes it more likely for an individual to begin doing so as well. This is especially true for teenagers, who cave to peer pressure more easily. Addiction creates vast problems within a family unit, including dysfunctional relationships and emotional problems for everyone involved.

Medical and Financial Problems
Drug and alcohol addiction can keep otherwise intelligent people from being productive members of society. Addicts are more likely to miss work and switch between jobs. Many medical problems can be linked to alcoholism or drug addiction. One-third of new AIDS cases in 2000 were related to drug use. Addiction leads to many medical issues which help to overwhelm our medical system.
