Everyone Deals with Addiction

 

Addiction is not something that happens just to other people. Basically everyone has some form of addiction. Caffeine is a popular one in the United States. Many people feel they can’t start their day without a cup of coffee. Over time, this may increase to two cups of coffee each morning. Even if it doesn’t, the person can’t feel the effects of the first cup as they did when they began drinking it. This is the same concept of tolerance that people have with drug and alcohol addiction.

Don’t Underestimate Your Addiction

Do not underestimate your addiction. It is a difficult foe that will not give in easily. The commitment level required can be hard to explain to the addict attempting recovery. It is sometimes even harder to explain to those around the addict. Addicts loved ones often make uninformed statements like “why don’t you just quit” or “You started this thing and now you need to stop it”. It is certainly not the speakers fault. Those who have not struggled with addiction can not be expected to understand. Substance abuse recovery is not easy. It is not something that can be done alone.

Phone Counseling Can Reduce Alcohol Abuse

New research suggests that counseling by phone can help reduce alcohol consumption among problem drinkers. Many studies in the past have shown that just a few conversations with a doctor or counselor about alcohol abuse can help people to drink less. This is often referred to as brief interventions. However, we now know that these discussions don’t necessarily have to take place in person.
